This is the time to act - Manhyia Palace and National Peace Council

The intervention of the Manhyia Palace and the National Peace Council on the 27th of November 2012 at the Great Hall of the KNUST when the flag bearers of the various political parties who participated in the 2012 general elections pledged their commitments and support for a peaceful elections helped calmed down tension in the elections. It also helped to reduce the fears in the minds of many Ghanaians.

The peaceful nature of the 2012 elections is not in doubt as many Ghanaians can attest to this fact. We should also not forget that the election is not yet over as one of the parties is in court challenging the result of the elections. Even though, the court case has also been peaceful, we should not forget the fact that there will be a judgment.

The perception of many Ghanaians on the election petition can be put in three perspectives. The first group are those who are of the view that the president will be allowed to continue his term of office. The second group are those who are of the view that the petitioners will be declared winners. The third group are those who are of the view that the elections will be re-run.

The Akan have a saying that “de3 ab3 b3tobiara y3 mpoy3mu”. Literally means wherever the ruling will be, it will benefit some people.

Every well meaning Ghanaian seeks first the peace of the nation. As a well meaning Ghanaian, I would like to take this opportunity to call on the Manhyia Palace and the National Peace Council to act now before one will say had I known. The Supreme Court judges have done extremely well by issuing an order to warn all Ghanaians to guard against our comments which can inflame passions.

I would like to call on those who saw the need to organise the Kumasi Peace Declaration on the 27th November, 2012 at the KNUST to come again and invite the two main contenders in court, that is President John Dramani Mahama and Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo to re-affirm their commitments to abide by the ruling of the Supreme Court. This should be telecasted live on TV for the whole nation to watch as it was done at the KNUST Great Hall. This will control the passion of their followers who are capable of causing chaos in the country. I believe if this is done it will help us all to build on the peace that the nation is enjoying.
